Trento - Jena (2016)

This page describes a proposal for the syllabus for students who participate in the Double Degree Master Program in cooperation with the Universitá degli Studi di Trento and who spend their first year in Trento and their second year in Jena. This proposal takes into account the 2016 changes in the Modulbeschreibung in Jena. Students who have started the Double Degree before 2016 can follow the old syllabus

From 2018 students use this syllabus.

From 2020/21 students follow the Syllabus for the “Laurea Magistrale in Behavioural and Applied Economics - Economia Comportamentale e Applicata”.

This syllabus recommends one possible path through the study regulations of Trento and Jena. It is possible to deviate from this path. However, Students who plan to deviate from the syllabus do this on their own responsibility. They have to make sure that they are still studying in accordance with the regulations in Jena and in Trento. They are advised to make explicit learning agreements to ensure that the courses they are taking can be credited in Trento and in Jena.

Information regarding the application procedure and regarding organisational matters is provided by the School of Economics at the FSU.

All students must to apply for their seminars in Jena through the central seminar registration. To register, students must use either their @uni-jena.de or their @studenti.unitn.it Email address. Please do not miss the deadline — the application procedure starts several months before the first seminar!

Students can choose one out of four Specialisation areas:

• Innovation and Change
• Economics and Strategy
• World Economy
• Public Sector Economics

1st year in Trento (64 ECTS)

In their first year students obtain 64 ECTS in Trento. They take the following courses:

Intensive courses

• Introduction to Mathematics
• Introduction to Economics
• Introduction to Statistics

(The first two (Introduction to Mathematics and Introduction to Economics) are taken together equivalent to Approaches to Economic Science in Jena.)

First year courses (64 ECTS)

• Microeconomics and Game Theory (10 ECTS) (counts as Advanced Microeconomics (6) + one Specialisation elective (6) in Jena).
• Macroeconomics and Monetary Policy (8 ECTS) (equivalent to Advanced Macroeconomics (6) in Jena).

  Students who do not take this course in Trento are advised to take Advanced Macroeconomics in Jena, instead.

• Advanced Data Analysis and Mathematical Models 1 (6 ECTS) (counts as Specialisation elective (6) in Jena).
• Advanced Data Analysis and Mathematical Models 2 (6 ECTS) (counts as Specialisation elective (6) in Jena).
• Industrial Organization (8 ECTS) (counts as Specialisation elective (6) for Innovation and Change/Economics and Strategy in Jena).
• Management and Business Decisions (8 ECTS) (counts as Basic elective (6) in Jena).
• Econometrics (8 ECTS) (equivalent to Empirical Methods (6) in Jena).
• Law and Economics (6 ECTS) (counts as basic elective (6) in Jena).
• Laboratory (4 ECTS) (equivalent to one Seminar in Jena).

2nd year in Jena (60 ECTS)

Students who spend their second year in Jena obtain 60 ECTS as follows:

General requirements (6 ECTS)

Basic Electives (6 ECTS)

Students take 6 ECTS out of the following “basic electives”:

• MW21.2-Money and Financial Markets (6 ECTS) (counts as Area Economics in Trento).
• MW22.1-Regional Development (6 ECTS) (counts as Area Economics in Trento).
• MW23.6-Advanced Public Finance (6 ECTS) (counts as Area Economics in Trento).
• MW25.1-Public Choice (6 ECTS) (counts as Area Economics in Trento).

Seminar and Master Thesis (30 ECTS)

The following is compulsory:

• Seminar (6 ECTS).
• Master Thesis (24 ECTS) (counts as 14 ECTS Master Thesis, 6 ECTS Elective, 4 ECTS extra credits in Trento).

Specialisation area (18 ECTS)

Students choose one the following four Specialisations and take all 18 ECTS from this Specialisation:

Innovation and Change:

• MW20.3-Economics of Innovation I: Innovation Decisions (6 ECTS) (counts as Area Economics in Trento).
• MW21.4-Growth and Business Cycles / MW21.4-Growth and Innovation (6 ECTS) (counts as Free Choice in Trento).
• MW22.3-Innovation Systems (6 ECTS) (counts as Area Economics in Trento).

Economics and Strategy:

• MW20.3-Economics of Innovation I: Innovation Decisions (6 ECTS) (counts as Area Economics in Trento).
• MW24.2-Quantitative Economics I (6 ECTS) (counts as Free Choice in Trento).
• MW24.5-Quantitative Economics III (6 ECTS) (counts as Area Economics in Trento).

World Economy:

• Advanced PSE I: Systems Competition (6 ECTS) (counts as Area Economics in Trento).
• MW21.5-International Trade (6 ECTS) (counts as Free Choice in Trento).
• MW25.2-Trade and Development (6 ECTS) (counts as Area Economics in Trento).

Public Sector Economics:

• Advanced PSE I: Systems Competition (6 ECTS) (counts as Area Economics in Trento).
• MW24.5-Quantitative Economics III (6 ECTS) (counts as Free Choice in Trento).
• Fiscal Policy in Open Economies / MW21.3-Monetary and Fiscal Policy (6 ECTS) (counts as Area Economics in Trento).
