The VPL at the FSU Jena recommends appending a “Declaration of Academic Integrity” to your master’s thesis. In case you use such a declation and if you plan to use AI tools, your examiner may issue a “Declaration of Permitted Resources”. The following text should be a “Declaration of Permitted Resources” for this case:
Guidelines for Using AI Tools in Student Projects
(Declaration of Permitted Resources)AI tools can be helpful resources. However, it is important that your work reflects your own understanding and effort. To use AI responsibly in your projects, seminars and master theses, please keep in mind the following points:
- Your Own Contribution
- AI tools can assist you in generating ideas or refining your work. However, the final product must include significant, original contributions by you. AI tools can enhance, but not replace, your thinking and creativity.
- Transparency
- If you use AI tools (for example, to refine your writing, to generate ideas, or to suggest code), clearly state (in a footnote, or in an appendix) what you have used it for. You should document how you’ve benefited from AI tools and how you make sure that your core work is genuinely yours.
- Plagiarism-Free Work
- Don’t copy and paste AI-generated content without reviewing and critically engaging with it. The work you submit reflects your own understanding, perspective, and voice.
- Critical Thinking
- Don’t rely on AI-generated information. Verify facts, analyze suggestions, and make thoughtful decisions about what to include in your project.
- Collaboration with AI is not a Substitute for Human Collaboration
- AI is not a replacement for teamwork. If your project involves group work, you should collaborate with your peers and balance the use of AI tools with human input.
Please let me know if you need help understanding how these guidelines apply to your specific project.
